The Craft of Scientific Writing is designed to help scientists and engineers--both professionals already active in the disciplines as well as students preparing to enter the professions--write about their work clearly and effectively. The author, who is both a writer and an applied physicist, approaches the subject in a fresh way.
Using scores of examples from a wide variety of authors and disciplines including such well-known figures as Einstein, Bohr, and Freud , the book demonstrates the difference between strong scientific writing and weak scientific writing. In essence, this book shows you how to bring your ideas across to your intended audience.

After his refreshing treatment of words and numbers, Alley turns his attention to illustrations. He points out that white space can be as important as the diagram itself if you are to make your illustrations eye-catching. This sort of design point is often not appreciated by scientists, who can inadvertently overcrowd a figure and, thereby, deter the reader from looking at it.
Our natural training inclines us to be economical with space, but this is self-defeating if our diagrams are ignored. Alley also warns about the use of graphs.
He reminds us that all graphs are subjective, and need special care if we want them to be taken seriously. It is not the scientist who has brought this valuable tool for presenting information into disrepute. The graph has been betrayed by politicians and advertisers, who use it to deceive rather than enlighten.

Eventually, and halfway into the book, Alley gets down to his real objective: how to write better scientific papers. Nor is his advice limited to the structure and content of scientific papers. He tells us how to get into the right mood by jogging, and even what food to nibble to keep us there. Celery, carrot, raisins, and sunflower seeds come highly recommended.
Curiously, Alley has little say about wordprocessors, which are surely the means by which most scientific papers now start life, and which one day will be able to correct our grammar and style as well as our spelling. When that day comes, there will be no market for books such as The Craft of Scientific Writing. So what?
